MISSION

Run jobs-to-be-done research from your customer calls

Jobs-to-be-done research starts with finding the right people and asking about the moment they decided to switch. Your calls already point to both.

REQUEST A MISSION

Tell us the meeting and what should happen after it. More detail means a sharper flight plan.

Request a mission

What it does

This mission applies the jobs to be done framework to the calls you already have. First, it reviews recent customer and prospect calls to find the people worth interviewing: recent buyers, recent switchers and customers who described a clear struggle. Then it reads those calls for the pieces of a job story: the situation, what pushed them to look for something new, what pulled them toward you and what almost held them back.

You get a shortlist of people to interview and a first-draft job map, so your interviews go deeper instead of starting from scratch.

Who it's for

Product managers, product marketers and founders running JTBD research who want better interview candidates and a head start on synthesis.

The flight plan

Run it at the start of each research round.

  1. Connect Fathom to ChatGPT or Claude.
  2. Run the starter prompt on the last 90 days of customer and prospect calls.
  3. Review the shortlist and invite the strongest candidates to interview.
  4. Use the draft job map to plan your interview questions.
  5. After the interviews, add those calls to the analysis and update the job map.

RULES

Look for recent decisions. People remember the switch best while it's fresh.

Separate the push (problems with the old way) from the pull (what attracted them).

Quote customers exactly.

Don't treat a feature request as a job. Ask what it would help them get done.

Leave out anything confidential.

What good looks like

A good job story names a real situation and the progress the customer wanted. A mediocre one restates a feature.

GOOD

"When I take over a team mid-quarter, I want to get up to speed on every open deal in a day, so I can coach reps before the quarter ends. Push: 'I spent a week reading old CRM notes.'"

MEDIOCRE

"Users want better search."

STARTER PROMPT

⧉ Copy

Use Fathom to look through my customer and prospect calls from the last 90 days.

Find people who recently bought, switched from another tool or described a clear struggle with how they work today. List the best 10 candidates for a jobs-to-be-done interview, with the call, why they're a good fit and a quote that shows it.

Then, across those calls, draft job stories in the format: When [situation], I want to [motivation], so I can [outcome]. For each, note the push, the pull and any anxieties that held them back, with supporting quotes.

FAQs

Questions? We’ve got you covered.

How do I find people for jobs-to-be-done interviews?

Look for customers who made a recent decision: they bought, switched or hit a clear struggle. Your recent sales and customer calls show who those people are, and AI can scan them and return a shortlist with the quote that makes each one a good fit.

Can AI replace jobs-to-be-done interviews?

No, but it gives them a head start. Calls show the situation and the struggle, while an interview lets you dig into the moment someone decided to switch. Use the draft job map to plan sharper questions.

Which Fathom plan do I need to run this skill in ChatGPT or Claude?

Any Fathom plan, including Free. The skill reads your calls through Fathom's MCP integration with ChatGPT and Claude, which is on every plan.

What is the jobs to be done framework?

The jobs to be done framework explains purchases by the progress a customer is trying to make in a specific situation, rather than by features or demographics. A job story captures it as: when [situation], I want to [motivation], so I can [outcome].
